just thought i'd start a thread about OS X. there may be little tweaks or apps that may seem old hat to you guys but may be useful to me since i'm only into my 2nd year as a mac user. so i thought i'd share some of mine to get the ball rolling.

i was using this app called mirage under leopard up until i installed snow leopard and ran into compatibility issues and basically just forgot about it until about a week ago.

mirage makes it pretty easy to have a completely transparent dock so that all you have is the icons. it installs fine under leopard but snow leopard only works with manual manipulation of some of the files. still easy as pie though. if anyone is interested.

and i finally found this app called windowshade x that let's me minimize windows onto the desktop as small tiles. i used to have a program on windows that would let me do this but it took me forever to find a mac version. i don't know why but i love being able to do this. the app does a little bit more than this but this is mainly what i use it for.

I figured I'll make a thread for if I see non-mainstream films I think you guys could be interested in because each one probably won't generate a bunch of comments like Inception or Transformers III. This way it stays all nice and tight and I don't clutter up Fanboy Fodder with my nonsensical ramblings.


The International Film Festival has hit Auckland and me and the missus went to Exit Through The Gift Shop, which is a fun and entertaining look at street art through the eyes of a fun and entertaining French dude called Thierry Guetta with a compulsion to make videos of everything. He found out his cousin was Invader (a guy who makes little tile mosaics of Space Invaders and glues them in random places around the city) and began filming him, then through Invader made various other contacts in the street art world including Shepard Fairey, and eventually notorious and secretive Brit artist Banksy.

Banksy and Thierry became friends and for the first time Banksy allowed himself to be filmed making his art, with the proviso that to maintain his anonymity he only be filmed from behind, and only his hands. Eventually though, Banksy realised Thierry isn't a documentary maker, just a fun and entertaining guy with a compulsion to film things, so Banksy took Thierry's hundreds and hundreds of tapes and started to make a film himself, eventually deciding that Thierry was more interesting than himself, and so the film is eventually about Thierry.

Confusing? It's not when you watch it. Our packed theatre was laughing our asses off.


The second festival film we got to was A Prophet, the much hyped and celebrated French prison film. It starts out tough. 19 year-old Malik finds himself locked up for 6 years and alone, with no contacts or protection inside. It's not long before he finds himself in a no win situation - take out another inmate at the orders of a gang of Corsican prisoners or be killed himself. The murder scene itself is one of the most viscerally portrayed hits I've ever seen, given even more grunt by wince-inducing earlier, bloody scenes where he practises hiding a double edged razor blade IN HIS MOUTH! And when the killing is carried out it isn't clean or easy, it's clumsy and messy and feels horribly real.

But after this dark-as-all-hell start the film gradually shifts tone to become more of a birth-of-a-crime-kingpin Godfather type fable as we see Malik grow from what amounts to no more than a disrespected errand boy of the Corsican gang to a powerful gangster in his own right with multiple interests outside the walls of the prison. There's a scene where, during one of his leave days for good behaviour, Malik kills again, taking out multiple bodyguards from a rival Italian gang in a shootout that takes place almost entirely in the interior of an armoured SUV. In contrast to the cold brutal realism of his first kill, this scene is played for pure cinematic poetry.

His effectiveness as a killer is offset by the tenderness with which he deals with his best friend's young son, his Godson. Prison hardens his exterior, educates him in the ways of the criminal world and teaches him skills he uses to survive and thrive in it, but it doesn't strip his humanity from him. If you don't have a problem with subtitles I recommend this one big time. Many critics and fans are already hailing it as a classic of the crime genre. I don't know about that yet, I just know it's a really good film that I definitely want to see again.

I just learned that Street Hawk is about to be released on dvd. That was one of the shows me and my brothers loved to watch as kids, along with the liked of Knight Rider, CHiPs and Airwolf.

Hey everyone, Just logged back in after a while of absence. I have been listening to the shows and such, and the humor is still flowing.

I know that I have mentioned things switched on has said said multiple times while talking to friends, family, relatives ever since I started listening to the show, and this question has been on my mind. I know that directing people to the site is one thing, but this topic could lead to new intuitive ways to show people some of the hidden humor on the internets.

I think The Bourne Identity, Leon and Pulp Fiction are my three favourites, and I really liked In Bruges. I need to see Grosse Point Blank again though, I remember liking that quite a bit but it's fuzy in my memory.

This new film from The Cloon looks promising too. I liked Michael Clayton a lot and this looks to be of the same vibe, but with more badassness. And the cinematography and actresses look gorgeous.

And they don't let Gwyneth be as fun as she was in the first one but Sam Rockwell is class in an unforgiving role and Sam Jackson is Sam Jackson. And Don Cheadle's fine, if unremarkable (until he steals the last scene), but Mickey Rourke is just a delight of pure screen presence. He's not given much to work with in some scenes but by charisma alone he remains just a joy to watch and elevates what's a shonky, half-assed script at times just by being Mickey Rourke.

And finally, a couple of years late, I see why everyone went so gaga over Scarlett Johanson. Mother of PEARL is that girl smoking hot when she gets those eyes working.

Anyone ever seen one of these? I like to consider myself a fan of what is and what is coming, but how did I miss that people were only publishing video in this format, but that they had a 360 degree camera in Texas Stadium when they imploded it!

This is really really cool. NASA had a 16mm camera catch the footage at high speed, so you are seeing about 25 sec of footage, but it's over 8 minutes long so that you can see the detail.

So, I don't know if you guys remember, but around about show 94, I visited the ER because of a hernia (or two). I also talked on that show (or one close to then) about my high school ex-girlfiend being my nurse... does this sound familiar? Well, anyway, I was on Facebook today (I'm not friends with her BTW) and someone else posted that there were memorial details posted on her FB wall. I was like "WTF?". Anyway, I researched it, and yes it seems she passed away Sunday after a tough battle with cancer, something she may have beaten already. It's just weird to me, especially since she was diagnosed within several months of that show being recorded where I talk about running into her (then selling her nephew one of my phones a few days later - pure coincidence). Anyway, just thought I'd share, since it's sort of come up on teh show at some point.

I don't think I'm gonna get a burger and a handjob deal, but at least there is a possibility that we could REALLY see a Dallas In N Out burger. Rob and I are going to live on the sidewalk outside of a prime future location, as soon as we can get an address.

I don't know how much TV you guys watch but how would you say your viewing habits break down percentage-wise between the six genres of comedy, action/drama, sport, news, reality and documentary? I count movies as a separate thing than made-for-TV stuff.

I don't know where you draw the line between reality and documentary (things like Man Vs Wild might straddle the line somewhat) but lives don't depend on this sucker, only discussion, so feel free to be liberal with interpretations, lubrications and ejaculations. Speaking of which, I also consider porn a separate category but I'm open to arguments that it isn't.

like the other week the wife and i were at a mexican restaurant that we frequent. every friday night they have karaoke. well we were in there one friday night and this group of 3 girls (none of them could have been older than 12) got up to sing and i couldn't stop thinking about how funny it would be if they started doing "closer" by nine inch nails.

reading a book is very interactive. there is nothing but you and the words. the words are the blueprints but your imagination is the bricks and mortar that brings the world you are reading about to life.

a movie is the other side of that coin. it's all about the artist's intent. the film maker shows you exactly what he/she wants you to see and in the way they want you to see it. i believe avatar is the only movie where 3d was the original intent of the creator.

how can you really enjoy the lighting or composition of a scene if you're ducking yo-yo's? how can you enjoy a film's cinematography if a little fluttery creature is foating around in the foreground of a shot? i have no way of knowing, but i hope most director's are in favor of 3d fading away.

i have to believe the studio execs just see 3d as a way to charge more for tickets. if that's the case then it's only a matter of time before they lose interest because in the long run they'll only make money off of the hyper-movies like avatar in 3d. because nobody really wants to spend an extra $5 to see little jimmy goes to the store in 3d.

so i watched avatar today. i was looking forward to seeing it in 2d.

boring aspect ratio stuff --> i only watched it once at the theater and didn't realize until today that it had an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 instead of 2.35:1 (which most over-the-top hollywood blockbusters are). so i did a little research and found that the 3d version of the movie in theaters was 1.85 and the 2d version in theaters was 1.85 cropped to 2.35. so i have to thank cameron for not cropping the 2d home version.

so i have to say this goes into my list of top 3 best examples of eye-candy on home video (baraka, the dark knight the other two) and is a joy to look at.

that being said, i have to admit i was a little bored watching it this time around. i'll probably wait a couple months and watch it again with fresh eyes but right now i have no desire to ever see it again. which is disappointing because i was really looking forward to watching it at home in 2d because i usually enjoy movies more at home than in the theater.

Well, I come bearing bad news... I had to put Roxy down today. Thought we were going in for a little cleaning after her doggy period, only to see her slide downhill overnight to a questionable condition. Turns out, she had a uterus infection known as Pyometra, and as weak as she'd become already, she was unlikely to able to survive a full hysterectomy. To settle the 'what to do' dilemma, her kidneys were entering full failure, which of course a dog can't recover from. She was a few weeks short of 10 years old.

Knowing she was getting older and that it was bound to happen, I was sure I'd handle it better, but I was wrong.

I've increased my fiber intake drastically (easy..eat green stuff and drink Metamucil)
Whiskey always gives me the rocket turds. I drank a bottle of Jack and vomited for hours, but never so much as farted.

My weight is stable and has been over the past 3 years, none of my prescription drugs cause poo issues, but I ain't had a good crap in 6 months.

I've literally come to dread the act, as it brings nothing but pain and suffering, and those are just the toilet's feelings.

Maybe I need a TV in there to relax and then let the Force flow thru me into the bowl.

Poo is never pleasant, but I've done things in the bathroom that defy nature and I am sure are considered sinful in most major religions...I even have nightmares about it.


so in conclusion there is a disturbance in my bowels and the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance. But the toilet paper companies are making millions off of me.

Hey guys, I just wanted to drop a quick note on here about the shows that we are behind on. I've had some issues lately with getting tasks done, and I'm trying to do what I can to make some changes that will allow me to get back to a place where I can complete the crap I start.

What that means is, I'm trying to get to where I can get the last several shows out. I'm finishing up the second half of 164 right now, then will move to 165 and even 166 very soon. I had already realized I was far behind, but it wasn't until I saw a file date for 164 (iPhone file) that I realized that this show is almost 4 damn months old.

i know that 'epic' gets thrown around a lot from all the internet kiddiez. but i have to say that the new god of war for the ps3 is nothing short of epic.

it's easily the best realtime graphics i've ever seen on a console system thanks in large part to the absolutely stunning use of lighting.

and the orchestral score is like something out of a big-budget hollywood blockbuster.

the game is very bloody and violent and probably not everyone's cup of tea. but man is it good.

This one's trickier because I want to try to record it as a song with the trusty old (and I mean OLD) Casiotone MT-52, so some things need to rhyme. Or maybe it'd be funnier if they don't. I don't know, what am I, a doctor?

If you make it rhyme then choose any rhyme scheme you want, ABAB, ABCB, AABB, AAAA, COCK, it doesn't matter. I'll make it work. I want this to be as easy as team-songwriting can be. I don't know how easy that is yet but we'll soon find out. Also, if you want to change any of the words I've used to make a phrase fit then go for it. Just don't make any of these lines 96 syllables long, that's all I ask.

To make it a proper team effort I feel like we should take two lines at a time rather than filling out whole verses. And by we I mean you guys, I'll do the easy bit at the end with the Casiotone. Although if any of you want to put a guitar or sax or Mongolian throat singing solo on it I'll make sure there's a break for that too. The possibilities are endless.

any of you run any anti-virus or any malware/spyware protection? on windows this was a constant battle, but i've never really been worried about it on my mac.

i run an app called little snitch that monitors outbound traffic (i don't like things calling home without me knowing) and i've never had anything suspicious pop up.

i've read of theoretical mac viruses but have yet to hear of one in the wild.

i do a lot of 'research' into helping find and prevent warez. :D

on windows i had to be especially vigilant when dealing with such matters, but on my mac i've never induced a 'data calamity'.

Ok, C-3P0 is hot.

I saw this a couple of days ago and liked it quite a bit, especially the first third, during which I think I lolled more than in any other film for at least half a decade. I wasn't expecting that because even though I'm a Wes Anderson fan his movies aren't usually lolfests, the humour is more odd and subtle and restrained. This one though, I found hilarious.

Clooney is fine as Fox but the real standouts are Jason Schwartzman, who I don't usually love, Michael Gambon as Farmer Bean the main villain, Willem Dafoe as a street-thug rat and Wally Wolodarsky as Fox's right hand man, a possum called Kylie (yeah, he's a dude possum, not a girl).

There were youngish (under 6) kids in the theater whose heads it seemed to go over but anyone older who's into smart animation that doesn't have to be all modern and shiny could have a real good time with this.

Note: There is no live action in the film, I just love Bill Murray.

i rooted my droid® last night so i guess i am just still feeling a little froggy because my xbox 360 optical drive is sitting opened on my floor right now. its been having trouble recognizing discs the last couple of weeks. just wanted to take a little break to reflect on the fact that now i'm not feeling so froggy. i'm kind of hungry and wish i hadn't taken my 360 apart.

i thought the animated clone wars movie had a mediocre story but i really dug the sculpted look of the characters and the overall art design.

i don't know if any of you guys are into animation but the clone wars tv series is pretty good. its not just obi-wan and anakin going around being gunslingers. a lot of episodes don't even have them as main characters. it blows away the prequels as far as storytelling goes. and i would go so far to say that the spirit of the show is more akin to the original trilogy than the prequels.

even if you're not big into animation, if you're a star wars fan i'd think you'd enjoy it.

don't know if any of you have seen the movie primer but it can be a little difficult to wrap your head around even after multiple viewings. it is a good little sci-fi movie that tries to take a realistic and plausible approach to time travel.

so i had to do some moving around when i got harry potter 6 yesterday and ended up moving trick 'r treat which reminded me that i never brought it up on here.

i'm a sucker for low-budget horror flicks of all sorts (if you are too then i implore you to find a copy of laid to rest and watch it asap). now this wasn't an independent low-budget flick, but it had that kind of feel to it. warner bros. gave it the cold shoulder after the disappointment (according to warner bros.) of superman returns (co-written by trick 'r treat writer/director michael dougherty) and left a practically finished movie lie on the shelf for two years only to give it the straight to home video treatment.

i thought it was a really good movie with a fantastic 'monster' character. it had the perfect tone for a movie of this type and i think its one of those flicks that i could watch every year around halloween.

now the story is at&t but it represents all ceo thinking in companies that control the pipelines. be they cell networks or the isp gatekeepers.

seems like i remember about 10 years ago, companies like at&t and verizon got BIG government subsidies to improve their networks and bring fiber right to the curb for every customer? at least that's what they said they were going to do but i ain't seen it.

besides that, why do all these retards talk about bandwidth like its some kind of limited resource? yes there is a maximum sustained throughput but just because some users use more bits doesn't mean there are less bits for other users. to say 3% of users use 40% of the network says absolutely nothing about usage.

at&t has done nothing but complain about iphone users for the last 2½ years. they should have used that time to study usage and optimize their network.

i use verizon as my carrier but at&t is my isp so i'm interested because if they try to implement some kind of crazy tiered network pricing for wireless it will only be a matter of time before they implement it with traditional internet connections.

I certainly find this interesting, and I especially find it interesting that Canonical / Ubuntu is involved, but if Chrome OS is truly going in the direction of purely having everything including user data in the cloud, with no programs or data on the user's system itself, I think that's a mistake. I think as things continue to develop the cloud will be a good tool, but not a destination. People will still want their programs and their files on their computers. When it comes to netbooks I can see taking a cloud-based approach, but I've also read that Chrome OS will be extended to regular desktop computers at some point too. Like I said, I think the cloud will be an interesting tool, but not the ultimate platform.

i know i'm new to the mac scene, but i wanted to share a really great tweak i have been using and loving. basically it allows you to have the whole screen dedicated to any app by hiding both the dock and menu bar. yeah you can hide the dock anyway, but if the dock isn't set to 'hidden' it hides it.

now this is a per app tweak and not global. basically you right click on an app and 'show package contents' go into the contents folder and find the 'info.plist' file and open it in a text editor.

now you should see <dict>

on the next two lines under <dict> paste

<key>LSUIPresentationMode</key>
<integer>4</integer>

i use '4' for the integer value but here's what they do:

this may be old news to life-long mac users but i can't tell you (being a windows convert) how extremely useful this is. internet browsing, photo edits, pdf reading. i don't do it for every app, but i love a fullscreen firefox with this.

Anyone else getting the Star Wars Jedi ad on almost every page load (front page)? It's funny, because it appears in the article that was published AFTER the Star Wars edit video appears. I keep getting Battlestar on that one.

so me and the wife get a hotdog a lowe's the other week. actually we get two because they are (as the kids say) teh awsum.

so we're sitting at the little table and there's this little bird about 6ft. away just staring at me. at first i thought it was odd, then i realize the little sucker is begging for food. now it was very windy that day. so i knew i couldn't just do the underhanded softball pitch style toss. there's no way it would make it to him. so i kind of side-armed it ninja throwing star style.

now get this, that piece of bread pierced the air like a missile and hit that bird square on the head. bird didn't even flinch. it hit him, he gave me the quickest of "dude, wtf?" looks and then snatched that bread up and hopped under one of the riding lawnmowers to chow down.

just thought it was funny.

don't know if any of you are familiar with the hak.5 video podcast but even if you aren't they've got a cool wall•e wallpaper.

In 2007, we announced that show 150 would be the our last show; the end of switched:ON. -A decision that was hard to make, but necessary none-the-less. We always knew when we announced it that we'd want to get together and record something, but what that would be, and how we would relate that to a show that was 'over'.

Of course we did record, and even when the original show domain was gone, we still put a few odd shows out and released them into the feed. A few core listeners stuck around and heard these, and a few casual people stumbled on then as well. For many, these remain unheard.

Now, we've returned. Coming back for a less agressive schedule (one release per month) we are bringing back the same old thing... because it works for us. We'll hang out, we'll turn on the mics, we'll sing some songs or play an odd game when we get bored, and we'll try to make each other laugh. Will we do this forever? We don't know. Will there be insane laughter every show? We hope so. Will Rob totally lose it with stupid people? Probably. What we do know, is that we are back, and we will try to have the best time we can... and let you hear it.

Now, I know that you'd rather have the full SOS crew release unreleased shows, but I guess this will have to do. I know I'm not the best looking member, or the most talented, or, really -- the most anything. Maybe I am the most angry behind the wheel...I don't know if that's good or not.

Hopefully, at least for the time being, this will also mark my return to the board on a regular basis. Work has been really kicking my ass, and if things work out the way I think they will, the beginning of the year will bring another "holy shit I can't think of anything else", but we'll see what happens.

This is a little video showing some of the 3D desktop goodness and some other interesting bits from the upcoming Ubuntu 9.10. Note the dock-like widget at the bottom is more than likely AWN which is a drop-in replacement for the standard panel, but it's not the default setup. Also, the animations in the video are a bit jerky, I'm guessing because it's being recorded, but normally it's quite smooth.

here in the U.S. you just wouldn't see pranks like the fake waterbed

Here's a question for you guys. The DVD drive on my computer has been having trouble playing the somewhat scratched up DVDs from Netflix, but my regular DVD player plays them just fine. Do you think the drive is just being picky, or perhaps it's wearing out?

And when I say the drive isn't playing the discs, I mean it's having trouble recognizing they're even there. It tries to spin up a few times like it's trying to recognize the disc, then it just quits.

like i said my professor did this and all 30 of us were looking around trying to determine if he was sane or not until he wrote in big letters on the board "EYES". i've only had one or two people get it right away so chances are good you'll be able to get a laugh or two with this if you didn't already know about it.
